Understanding ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how the brain processes information and regulates attention. While often diagnosed in childhood, many adults continue to navigate its complexities, which can impact planning, goal setting, organization, focus, motivation, and emotional regulation in unique ways.

Common Presentations

  • Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks, work, school, or recreational activities.
  • Frequent careless mistakes in schoolwork or professional tasks.
  • Challenges with organization and time management (e.g., 'time blindness').
  • Hyper-focus on specific interests while struggling with transitions/changes.
  • Impulsivity and difficulty waiting one's turn.
  • Restlessness or a feeling of being 'driven by a motor'.
  • Feeling physically or mentally blocked from starting an important task, or generally feeling like your motivation for important tasks is low.
  • Issues organizing and prioritizing tasks during the day.
  • Feeling like it takes you longer than your peers to get the same thing done.
  • Feeling a higher level of 'rejection sensitivity' (i.e., the emotional response that comes from a situation where you feel rejected or excluded).
  • Having feelings of being exhausted for most of the day, only to feel 'wired' when it is finally time to get some sleep.
  • Chasing quick feelings of stimulation/dopamine (e.g., by scrolling on your phone, constantly changing hobbies, etc.).
Does this sound familiar?

"I can't seem to finish anything I start, no matter how hard I try."

"My mind is always jumping around between a thousand different ideas."

"I'm always losing my things or forgetting important appointments."
