What is Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)?
Family life is rarely a straight line, and periods of distress or disconnection are common. EFFT is designed to normalize these challenges, empowering you as a caregiver to take an active role in your family's emotional healing and growth. Designed by caregivers, for caregivers, EFFT offers a framework that empowers you to show up in ways where you can make the biggest differences in your children's and family's lives.

Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) is an evidence-based approach that prioritizes the role of the caregiver. It operates on the principle that family members are uniquely positioned to support one another's recovery by learning to identify, validate, and respond to emotional needs as they arise. It centres listening, perspective taking, effective communication, and healthy relationship repairs after ruptures arise.
Core Components of EFFT
Caregivers as Agents of Change
You don't need to be a professional therapist to help your child, and much of what you're doing is probably really helpful already. Yet sometimes parenting can be complicated (as you know), and creative approaches might come in handy. We provide you with the tools for 'advanced caregiving', fostering a deep sense of security, safety, connectedness, and belonging in the home.
Emotion Coaching
Most of what we say and do to our loved ones is done with the best of intentions, often to rescue them from pain or doubt. However, what might feel supportive and validating in the moment can sometimes miss the mark. Learn to accurately label and validate your child's emotions in a way where they can feel you in the emotional rollercoaster alongside them.
Processing Caregiver Blocks
Together in session, we identify and work through the 'blocks' that make it hard to respond effectively with your children and family like fear, guilt, or frustration. Understanding these natural reactions allows you to stay as present and supportive as possible during difficult moments.
Repairing Relationship Injuries
EFFT focuses on resolving past misunderstandings, hurts, and sore spots with communication. For example, we might help facilitate a sincere conversation where you as a parent can openly acknowledge a past mistake to your child, helping to rebuild trust and emotional safety.
How EFFT Can Help You and Your Family
- It can help you ride the waves through your child's and adolescent's mental health challenges.
- It can help you navigate bigger bouts of anxiety, depression, or mood swings in the home.Â
- It can help equip you with advanced strategies for children who feel their emotions deeply (i.e., 'super feelers')
- It can help resolve chronic family conflict, hurtful interactions, and communication breakdowns.
- It can help build optimism and strength during resilience during stressful life situations and transitions.
- It can help remind you of your inherent amazing skills and abilities as a parent.
At Isaacs Psychology, we believe in the power of the family to heal. You don't have to carry these challenges alone.
