Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy
If you live with OCD or intense anxiety, you know how exhausting the cycle of intrusive thoughts and rituals can be. ERP is a specialized form of therapy designed to help you break that cycle. It is the gold-standard treatment for OCD because it focuses on helping you face your fears and live a meaningful life, without relying on compulsions to feel safe.

A Researched and Backed Approach to Freedom: ERP is a behavioural therapy that works by changing how your brain responds to triggers. By staying with the discomfort of an obsession without performing a compulsive action, you teach your nervous system that the perceived danger may not be a disastrous threat, leading to lasting relief through a process of gradually taking calculated risks and coming out the other side.
Four Main Focuses of ERP
1. Identifying Triggers
We start by identifying the specific thoughts, images, or situations (obsessions) that cause you distress. Example:Â Recognizing the fear that your hands are contaminated after touching a doorknob, or noticing the worry that will hurt someone you love.
2. The Fear Hierarchy
We create a 'ladder' of feared situations, ranked from least to most scary. We work our way up gradually, ensuring that you're supported and well-equipped to put this ladder together for yourself.
3. Planned Exposure
Together, we practice facing a trigger in a safe environment. Example: Purposely touching a 'dirty' surface as part of your therapy plan, then staying with the anxiety until it peaks and drops. Most often, this anxiety does in fact go down over time.
4. Response Prevention
The core of ERP: you choose not to do the ritual (like washing your hands) after the exposure. By doing this, you learn that you can handle the anxiety and find safety within, no matter how the exercise goes. We work on developing strategies to make this easier.
How ERP Helps You Take Your Life Back
At Isaacs Psychology, we help you apply ERP to the challenges of everyday life. Exposure practice is combined with other cognitive strategies to help challenge patterns that might have been feeling so ingrained for so long. Whether you are battling intrusive thoughts, repetitive rituals, or general overwhelming anxiety and rigidity, ERP provides the tools to stop OCD/anxiety from making your decisions and running your life.
