What is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)?
It is entirely normal to feel stuck or overwhelmed by the challenges life throws your way. The goal of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is not to dwell on the problems of the past, but to help you discover the inner strengths and practical tools you already possess to build a more hopeful, meaningful future.
SFBT is an evidence-based psychological approach grounded in action and positive psychology. Unlike some other traditional therapies that analyze the origins of distress, SFBT is a goal-directed, collaborative model that focuses on your specific desired outcomes and identifies the psychological resources needed to achieve them.
Core Components of the SFBT Approach
Strengths & Resources
We identify the skills and resilience you already have, and we use them to build on your current goals.
Example: Recalling a time you successfully managed a difficult conversation at work.
The Miracle Question
A visualization technique to clarify what a better life looks like. It helps make goals and hopes concrete.
Example: "If a miracle happened tonight, what is the first small sign tomorrow that life is better?"
Scaling Questions
Measuring progress using scaled questions to track growth (e.g., using a scale from 0-10). These scaled questions can also help monitor motivation, confidence, and skill building over time.
Identifying Exceptions
Finding times when the problems or barriers felt less severe. This helps you recognize your inner strengths and abilities.
Example: Remembering times where you felt more connected to your partner, and thinking about what you were doing at that point.
Future-Focused Questions
Shifting focus from "why this happened" to "how I want to live" in the future.
Example: Discussing specific steps to improve health behaviors for tomorrow, rather than rehashing how it hasn't happened yet.
